IRC Notice 2017/01
Amendment to IRC 2017 Rules

This Notice modifies ERS H.5.4 as permitted by H.5.4 (f) - click here to read relevant extract from ERS.

IRC Rule 13.2 is amended with immediate effect to read:

13.2 Measurements shall be taken in accordance with ERS Part 3 – Rules Governing Equipment Control and Inspection. ERS H.5.4 is amended by the addition of:

The batten specified in ERS H.5.4. shall be a standard 1m World Sailing blue batten unless an alternative length batten is required to achieve a consistent measurement in which case the measurer shall use a batten of consistent bend characteristics and length appropriate to the sail being measured except that the batten shall not be longer than the greater of 1m or 25% of foot length. If a batten longer than 1m is used, the measurer shall report the batten length to the Rating Authority.

Note: This amendment also applies to IRC 2016 rules still applicable in ‘South’ countries.

It has come to our attention recently that several sailmakers have developed spinnakers which may be flown with the luff as presented for measurement being there solely for measurement purposes, and when the sail is set with the luff folded back presenting a section of the body of the sail as the leading edge when set.

IRC Notice 2016-01 addresses this, click here to download the Notice in PDF format (English & French)

There appears to be some misunderstanding regarding the spinnaker pole/bowsprit rule change.

If a bowsprit boat decides to carry a spinnaker pole as well, the IRC rating will increase, but will not incur the additional penalty which previously applied.   Effectively the boat would rate as if it had a spinnaker pole of the same length as the bowsprit, which would be higher than a bowsprit of
that length.

If owners of bowsprit boats are thinking of adding a spinnaker pole we suggest that a trial is run to determine the effect on TCC.

We apologise for any confusion!
