Would like to join in your club's summer series, or take part in one of the classic regattas? If you want to compete in any of the huge number of club or international races taking place around the world it is likely that you'll need the 'season ticket' that is an IRC rating.

The Cape to Rio Race sponsored by Xtra-Link and organised by the Royal Cape Yacht Club is one of the world's oldest, longest and toughest ocean races.

36 yachts will cast off from Cape Town on January 4th with crew from all over the world. A variety of yachts will be flying the flags of eight different countries; Angola, Australia, Croatia, Germany, Great Britain, India, Italy and South Africa.

The second half of the year is when thoughts turn to the following sailing season and possible changes to rating rules, both the maths behind the ratings and the written rules. Do you actively take part in the direction of your chosen rating system, or do you feel that it is beyond your control?

On behalf of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, it is my pleasure to advise that 2014 will mark the 70th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The Rolex Sydney Hobart is renowned as one of the most significant and toughest ocean races in the world. It is an icon in the Australian sporting calendar. Each year the race throws out new challenges to participants. Two things are constant - the excitement and adrenalin rush on the start line on Boxing Day on Sydney Harbour (an experience not to be missed), and the warmth of the welcome at the finish in Hobart.

Hosted by the Royal Western Yacht Club in Plymouth, the J-Cup featured 47 yachts from the J-Boat range. Over 400 competitors enjoyed three days of superb competition, racing inside and outside the Plymouth Breakwater.

The largest class racing was the one-design J/109 fleet, which numbered 19 yachts. The J-Cup is an exclusive competition for J/Boat yachts, however by using the Spinlock IRC rating system seven different models were able to race against each other. As a result a further 17 yachts participated, racing in two IRC classes, which effectively doubled the entry level of the regatta and provided fair racing for yachts of different speed.
