The first sea trials of Knierim’s new P 33 had been eagerly anticipated - and the boat’s performance did not disappoint either spectators or the test crew.

During the sea trials, “Zephyr” - the silver-coloured first edition of the new Knierim model - reached its target of 7.2 knots upwind speed in a moderate breeze of 12-13 knots on flat waters. The required power was provided by a square-headed mainsail of 37.8 square metres and the 7/8th size code 1 jib. More than 50 percent of the 2.6 tons displacement is ballast. The stainless steel fin and the lead keel bulb were milled in the company-owned 5-axis milling machine of Knierim Tooling, as was the mould for the hull. It is constructed in carbon fibre of SGL in a sandwich technology. Line drawings came from the Judel/Vrolijk design office and were based on VPP and CFD calculations.

The new Lutra 80 Singularity has arrived in Europe from Australia.

At 24.5 metres (80-feet) with a maximum beam of 5.33m (17.49-feet), the Lutra 80 Singularity is a slender thoroughbred, conceived with performance and luxury in mind. Of her 24.5 tonnes, only 1.5 tonnes was given over to the internal fit-out.

McConaghy was selected as the builder early in the project. Singularity, though, was the yard's first true performance cruiser commission. The team at McConaghy led by Jono Morris helped Dutch Naval Architect, Adrian Konyendyk of Lutra Yacht Design, and the Owner's Representative, Oleg Gulinskiy, a Muscovite, put together an international task force of experts.

Singularity is not just a one-off; she has been developed with repetition in mind. The project team is already undertaking preliminary design research modelling for a larger version.

34m sailing superyacht nearing completion at Baltic Yachts

A collaboration between Reichel Pugh and Nauta Design, this 34m custom performance cruiser was designed for a Dutch client. The yacht is currently being built at Baltic Yachts’ facilities in Finland and is reaching its final stages of construction.

The deck layout is simple and designed from a racing sailor’s point of view without compromising aesthetics.

An hydraulically powered lifting keel, constructed by APM in Italy, allows for docking in shallower marinas, when retracted, while providing increased stability when fully extended for racing and cruising.

A consistently high level of enquiry to Ker Yacht Design for a yacht which could combine the satisfaction of racing a highly competitive boat, with the fun of a high performance racer, led to the creation of a cost effective 40' racer which also offers great potential for one-design racing.

The designers of Judel-Vrolijk and Hanse's developing department had to create a boat that offers more volume and comfort for the crew. LinQ boats, of the Netherlands, has launched its radical CQ-6 canting keel, high performance sportsboat.

The key to the boat's performance is the electronically controlled hydraulic canting keel system, which provides massive amounts of righting moment at the touch of a button. The keel takes only 8 seconds to fully cant from one side to the other, yet is also retractable, making it possible to easily put the boat on a trailer.

Featuring twin rudders and a powerful, high aspect-ratio sail plan, high-tech materials are used throughout; including a carbon rig.

The company has just announced the introduction of two additional simplified versions of the boat: 'Sport' and 'Trainer' both with a fixed keel and with various rig configurations as their names suggest. All versions can be upgraded to the full, canting keel racing 'Regatta' spec

The boat will be exhibited at various boat shows throughout Europe and interested parties can sign up for a trial sail at one of the many demonstration events that the company has planned by logging onto the LinQ boats website.

Beneteau is launching the new First 30, designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian, well known from the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race. The technical fine-tuning will be supervised by a sailor with an unique list of victories to his name, Michel Desjoyeaux, skipper of the monohull Foncia.

The first two of the line will go in the water at the end of June, launching a series of sailing events at St Gilles Croix de Vie under the aegis of the First 30 Team, headed by Eric Ingouf, Juan K. and Michel Desjoyeaux.

Following on the successful establishment of a new premier one design class in the South American region, the Soto 40 One Design Class is now heading to Asia.

The Soto 40 has been the runaway success story of the last year with ten yachts about to cross the startline at the Ilhabela Race Week as part of their Circuit 2010, sponsored by Mitsubishi.

Meetings are being held in Singapore and Hong Kong in the last week of July to launch the yacht in the Asia region and provide opportunities to discuss the establishment of a similar Circuit and Grand Prix series.

Five Soto 40s are also headed to Chile and the first US Soto 40 was launched in May this year.

X-Yachts Design Group have released detailed design drawings, specification and pricing information for their latest project; the new Xc 38, due for launch in August 2010.

The Xcruising range feature aft cockpit designs with classically styled bow and stern lines that maximise deck space. The hull lines are deeper and have a V-section forward of the keel, for a comfortable motion and easy passage making.

Despite blue water cruising credentials the Xc 38 will still provide the response and thrill of sailing that X-Yachts sailors admire. Her greater displacement demands a large sail area and her shallower draft requires a heavier keel bulb; in order to deliver a yacht that is ‘stiff’ but also forgiving, and easily manoeuvred by a couple. The only compromise over the Xperformance designs being her sailing ability in very light airs.

The J/111 first hull is molding and the deck plug is complete. The project is on track for sailing in June. Interest continues to grow, with two dozen orders from Europe, New Zealand, America and China.

For superior lift, low VCG and maximum righting moment, the J/111 has a vertical L-shaped bulb keel.

The large 60" wheel affords superior visibility of wind, waves and the leading edge of the jib. The interior for the American market has simple cruising accommodations, a functional galley and navigation station.
